Software Engineering in Motorsport

For over 15 years, I have been working in the Software Engineering field. Most of that time I have been developing and maintaining Software Solutions for Toyota Gazoo Racing - Europe, focusing on our entries in the World Endurance Championship, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

I was involved in the Toyota Formula One program for a short time, as well as a spending a short stint working on HIL Full Motion Helicopter Simulators. Before moving into the Software Engineering field, I spent many years as a Auto Electrician and Mechanic, hence my interest in Auto Racing!

I really enjoyed the technical aspects of designing custom software solutions for the Race Team, and seeing the bespoke system we have developed assisting the Teams performance at the track has been very rewarding.

Skills & Services

  • Mostly C# for the last several years. Before that I was developing in both C and C++ (Managed C++ as well). Also some experience in using VB, VBA and Borland C++.

    Going back even further, University studies forced me to use Java, so there's that as well!

  • Most of my C# development has been centered around the .NET framework, and in the last years moved into .NET 6 and 8.

    Oracle is the data storage that I am most familiar with, as it it used quite predominantly throughout the company. Microsoft SQL Server was also used.

    Over the last few years I have moved a large amount of source code from various locations to the DevOps Git Repository.

  • Recently I have been implementing a few REST API's, as part of our general plan to migrate a lot of our products to the cloud.

    Devops has also been a large part of our processes in the last years, and I have been responsible for introducing a large number of my colleagues to Process Management, AGILE and SCRUM methodologies and planning within the Devops environment.

  • For many years I was a member of a number of Brass Bands in both New Zealand and Germany.

    I also have previously enjoyed crewing for competitors during Rally events, but nowadays tend to to a bit of Gaming and streaming on Twitch during my spare time.

    Lastly, I am currently working on getting my old Corolla from Germany ready to run on the roads here in New Zealand. It's a long term project!
